It can be difficult to coach visitors when they feel hopeless, burned out, and like they have no control over workplace situations. Recent research by the ADP Research Institute (2020) categorized two types of individuals in U.S. workplaces, those deemed ‘highly resilient’ (19%) and all others categorized as less resilient (vulnerable) (81%). As ombuds, we can help many of the more vulnerable visitors learn sustainable ways to withstand, recover, and grow in the face of challenge and adversity.
This workshop defines what resilience is and what it is not, identifies the relationship between stress, burnout, and resilience, explores elements of stress hardiness, and imparts practical ways to build resilience. Participants will learn about resilience assessment tools, how to help visitors identify issues within their locus of control, and practice re-framing and non-triangulation techniques relevant to the workplace.
